UNIT 3:  RECOGNIZING CUES TO LECTURE ORGANIZATION

    When you compared the language used in a magazine to the language used in a lecture, you may have noticed that in the lecture transcript, you are given explicit directions about what to look at or listen for.

Cues to topic introductions

    e.g. let's first look at one aspect of language... I want to look at the sociological or sociolinguistic way of looking at language...

    We
can call these direction cues. They direct you to listen to something. In lectures, the speaker has to make clear:

- what she's going to talk about
- when she 's moving from point to point (transition)
- when she's starting a new section
