UNIT 4:
PHONOLOGICAL CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS

Aim:

• to contrast the phonetic sets of both languages and establish the differences



• to compare the rules for the alternation of sounds in L1 & L2 (if any)
E.g. Devoicing rule: English [+] – Vietnamese [-]

Procedures of CA

Gass and Selinker’s (1993, 1994)

1. Description of the two languages;

2. Selection of certain areas or items of L1 & L2 for detailed comparison;
E.g. articulation features

3. Comparison, i.e. the identification of areas of difference and similarity;
E.g. performance of English stops

4. Prediction, i.e. determining which areas are likely to cause errors;
E.g. performance of aspiration

5. Testing the predictions
E.g. Test learner’s performance

3 important checks

1. Does the L1 have a phonetically similar phoneme?
2. Are the variants (all allophones) of the phonemes similar in both languages?
3. Are the phonemes & their variants similarly distributed?

Generating Hypotheses

1. The Vietnamese students may fail to pronounce English stops correctly because they do not pay much attention to the manner of articulation and the positions of English stops in a word.
2. They may fail to pronounce English stops correctly by transferring habits of pronouncing Vietnamese stops in Vietnamese words.
3. They may fail to correctly pronounce vowels followed by a voiced or voiceless English stops.

DISCUSSION OF THE RESULT OF TESTING

With the result of the diagnostic test of the learner’s performance of perception and production of English stops, the researcher can determine whether the result (qualitative & quantitative evidence) significantly support or reject his/her hypotheses.

The discussion should focus itself on the qualitative information (categories or types of errors made by the learners) and the quantitative information (the frequency of the occurrence of the learner performance of the stops at various positions).

Conclusions:

Perception:
- Vietnamese students failure to discriminate between minimal pairs of sounds (/p/ - /b/ in every position, /t/ - /d/, /k/ -/g/) in final position

Production:
Students tend to make common errors when pronouncing English stops:
♦ At word level, most learners mispronounce the phonetic variants of /p/ and /b/ without aspiration at initial position
♦ Failure in releasing English stops
♦ Tendency of deleting the stops in the final position
♦ Tendency of inserting schwa /@/ after /p, b, d, k, g/ followed by /l, r/
♦ Failure of differentiating vowel length ended with stops


Words & Expressions

1. phoneme (n) âm vị
Đơn vị nhỏ nhất của âm của một ngôn ngữ, có thể phân biệt 2 từ khác nhau với ý nghĩa khác nhau. Ví dụ:
A. trong tiếng Anh các từ pan và ban chỉ khác nhau ở âm đầu: pan bắt đầu với /p/ và ban bắt đầu với /b/
B. ban và bin khác nhau chỉ ở các nguyên âm của chúng: /&/ và /I/
Vì vậy, /p/, /b/, /&/ và /I/ là các âm vị khác nhau của tiếng Anh. Con số các âm vị của các ngôn ngữ là khác nhau. Tiếng Anh được xác định có 44 âm vị: 24 phụ âm và 20 nguyên âm

2. Allophone (n phonetic variants) âm tố/ biến thể phát âm của âm vị
Bất kỳ biến thể phát âm khác nhau của một âm vị. Các âm tố khác nhau của một âm vị được nhận biết khác nhau về mặt phát âm nhưng tương tự như nhau về mặt ngữ nghĩa của một từ. Các biến thể âm này xuất hiện trong các môi trường/bối cảnh ngữ âm khác nhau được xác lập theo các qui luật âm vị học. Ví dụ, âm vị /p/ trong tiếng Anh là bật hơi (aspirated) khi âm này ở vị trí đầu một từ hay âm tiết (như trong pan), nhưng lại không bật hơi khi bị đứng trước bởi âm /s/ (như trong span), và có thể không nhả/buông âm khi xuất hiện ở vị trí cuối của một phát ngôn (như trong “he’s not her type”). Những âm không buông, bật hơi, không bật hơi này được nghe và nhận diện như cùng một âm vị /p/ mà không phải là /b/; chúng đều là các âm tố/ biến thể phát âm của của cùng một âm vị /p/ trong từ điển.



3. phonemic inventory (n) vốn âm vị
Số lượng âm vị có trong hệ thống của một ngôn ngữ, ví dụ: trong hệ thống âm vị tiếng Anh có 24 âm vị phụ âm và 20 âm vị nguyên âm

4. distributional restrictions (n) các chế định phân bố
Khả năng xuất hiện của một đơn vị (có thể là một âm tố hay một từ) ở các vị trí dành cho chúng trong các môi trường/bối cảnh nhất định. Ví dụ: âm tố bật hơi [ph] chỉ xuất hiện ở vị trí đầu từ hay âm tiết (như trong [ph&n]). Trong khi đó, âm tố không bật hơi có thể xuất hiện ở các vị trí sau âm [s] (như trong [sp&n]), và ở vị trí cuối từ (như trong [taIp])

5. Hypothesis (n) Giả thuyết
Giả định được đặt ra về một vấn đề ngữ âm hay âm vị học dựa trên kết quả đối chiếu sơ bộ giữa 2 ngôn ngữ L1 và L2 (vd: các tương đồng hay dị biệt giữa các âm vị tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt).
Kết quả sơ bộ đối chiếu các âm vị tắc bật (stop plosives) /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/ trong tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt có thể xác lập một số tương đồng và dị biệt như sau:

Tương đồng:
1) Tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt đều có các âm vị /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/
2) Tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt đều có các âm vị tương đồng về vị trí cấu âm:

3) Phân bố (vị trí xuất hiện)





Dị biệt:
Trong tiếng Anh, ở vị trí đầu các âm vị /p/, /t/, /k/ được thể hiện thành âm tố bật hơi [ph], [th], [kh] trong khi đó ở tiếng Việt chỉ có âm tố [th] xuất hiện ở vị trí này.
Từ kết quả đối chiếu sơ bộ này có thể đưa ra giả thuyết về ngữ âm như sau:
Người Việt học tiếng Anh có thể gặp khó khăn do không có thói quen phát âm các âm tố bật hơi ở vị trí đầu.

Questions:

1. English has at its disposal palato-alveolar /Í/ and /Ù/. Does Vietnamese as the L1 have a phonetically similar phoneme?
2. English and Vietnamese have at their disposal the stops /p/, /t/, /k/, /b/, d/, /g/. Are the variants (all allophones) of their phonemes similar in both languages?
3. Are the phonemes /p/, /t/, /k/, /b/, d/, /g/ and their variants similarly distributed?
4. State the TC (comparison criteria) for a contrastive analysis of the stops in English and Vietnamese?
5. Design a diagnostic test to support a hypothesis about the Vietnamese learner’s difficulty in pronouncing the stops /p/, /t/, /k/, /b/, d/, /g/ in English.
